When people see me and how fit I am today, they often say, “You have no idea what it is like to be overweight.” My reply? “No, but I know what it is like to almost lose my life because of my unhealthy way of dealing with stress!”

Stress nearly killed me back in 1997 when my mother died of cancer. During this time, I was also going through a horrible divorce. Although I kept exercising, I didn’t deal with my emotions or mental thoughts, and I dropped down to 97 pounds at nearly 5’ 10” tall. I had pencil-thin arms and only 6 percent body fat, which is very unhealthy for a woman. I barely had enough strength to go on. And when I decided I better get up and move, I knew I had to make some drastic changes in my life.

Just like someone who is obese, my heart was being strained. I am very fortunate that it didn’t give out on me. I needed to take action and choose a different route, just like many of my clients. Maybe you need to do something different?

I embarked on a journey to learn a better way to manage my stress and began focusing on my total self for complete health. Here’s what I learned: I’m only human. I’m not perfect just because I am in the fitness industry. Just like everyone else, I have good and bad days. I have days where life is so hectic that I wonder how in the world I will squeeze one more thing in, but then I remember my motivation: to beat the odds.

Both my parents died very young of cancer. The joke in our family is that we don’t know what health issues run in our family because everyone died too young to find out! Most of my relatives didn’t make it past 65, and my siblings and I are in uncharted territory. I am personally striving to beat the odds! I have chosen to manage my stress in a healthier manner now, eat a well-balanced diet and exercise. So when I don’t feel like it or simply don’t want to do it, I do it anyway.

I am committed to a healthy lifestyle. Eating right and exercising isn’t something I do on the side; no, it is a full-time activity. I figure this is the only body I have and it’s my life…I want to make the best of both of them!

I am just amazed at how awesome our bodies are! I went from a 97 pound, sick and weak body to a strong and healthy one. I weigh the most I have ever weighed but am still a size 4 to 6. How do I do it? One day at a time and step by step!

It is NEVER too late to make a change. I did it, and so can you!

I am also the author of seven published books and have been featured in international magazines, national radio shows and live television shows…improving the quality of people’s lives.
